Shades of Christmas

This is what Christmas looks like in California. We are celebrating our sixth holiday season here, and I’m still not quite used to it. It looks more like a beautiful autumn day back where I come from. Fall is my favorite season, so I’m not entirely opposed to this strange scene while shopping for my Christmas tree.

In fact, I think there is something quite beautiful, albeit slightly eerie, about the mist covered farm by the Christmas tree stand. Do you see the pumpkins behind the orchard? Yes, this is a strange land, indeed, where we buy Christmas blue spruces imported from Oregon, where one can look to the horizon to see lanky palm giants leering above the heartier native poplar and pepper trees, and where the Japanese maples turn brilliant shades of yellow and orange in honor of the approaching winter solstice. …It truly is a Christmas wonderland.

And, to appreciate our NorCal holiday, we’ve topped our tree with grapes.

Merry Christmas and Yule-tide blessings to all!
